A Little Bit of Britain at Penny Lane Pub

posted on 18 August 2011

Having recently come back from the UK - and had a wonderful experience visiting pubs in the Peak District - I just wanted to let you know about a British pub closer to (my) home. Living in the south has its advantages, but if you ever thought that Richmond, Virginia would have a little bit of Liverpool in its downtown area, people would think you were nuts. But the Penny Lane Pub is a local hangout which replicates the feel of an English pub, replete with British beers and menu items. It’s small enough to feel cozy and welcoming, but large enough to host large crowds and even private parties. I like going there when I want to relax after a stressful day at the office or when I want to unwind. It is more sedate than the other pubs and bars in town and is away from the strip where most of the younger crowd hangs out. Family owned, the Penny Lane Pub offers games like darts and pool and also has an outside seating area for their smoking friends. (State law severely regulates smoking in food establishments.) The wait staff is extremely friendly and they are more than happy to engage you in a game of British (or American) trivia. You never leave Penny Lane Pub without hearing a good story or learning a few new words or phrases. This is a great neighborhood place to relax with a pint or a bite!
