Using negative Keywords

When you have a PPC campaign, you will want to try out different targeted keywords. If you are trying to sell something, then you will want to try to attract people who are looking to buy the items that you are selling.

You will not want to be too broad in the keywords that you use. If you are selling brown suede women's boots, then you will not want to just target the keyword 'boots' as you will get a huge amount of different people with different requirements, you will want to target 'brown suede women's boots'.

You may find that people do not put women's in their search just brown suede boots. However, you do not want the men looking at the site. You should make it clear in your ad copy that they are not for men, but people may not read it properly and may click through anyway. This is a waste of money for you as they will arrive at the site and realise that it does not have what they want, but you will have paid for their click through. Therefore it could be good to use a negative keyword such as 'men's' so that you at least eliminate the people who specify they want men's boots.

It can be pretty difficult knowing exactly what words to include and exclude for your target keywords. It is difficult to know what people actually search for as well. This is why many people choose to use a PPC Management company to help them. They have access to data which informs them about search terms and which are the most popular. They also have knowledge of making up this sort of advertisement and experience, which you do not have. It can be extremely useful to get them to help you and then you will not have to worry about experimenting with it all yourself.
